What you need to know about how your glasses are made

Your prescription given to you by your optometrist is only a portion of the information needed accurately fabricate your new eyewear. During the normal process of selecting and properly fitting your new eyeglasses, your eye care professional and the opticians/dispensary technicians must determine a number of parameters to ensure that your custom made glasses give you clear and comfortable vision while making sure you look great. In you have a more complex prescription, including higher astigmatism, different prescription values for each eye or higher numbers in general, or if you your facial structures and eye positions are not properly addressed, even the most accurately measured prescription, may not generate optimal and/or "comfortable" vision. Some of the factors to be considered include:

  • Accurately measuring the distance between your pupils so that your new lenses will be properly positioned in the selected frame
  • Selecting the right size of frame for you and for your particular prescription
  • Selecting the right shape of frame for you and for your particular prescription
  • Determining the appropriate curvature of lens to use based on your prescription and the frame selected
  • Determining what type of lens material to use
  • Determining what coatings & tints to use on your lenses that best suit your needs
  • Determining the accurate height to place the optical center of the lens in the specific frames selected
  • Selecting the appropriate multifocal lens design to use based on your needs, prescription, frame selection, & vocation
  • Measuring the precise position at which to place the multifocal/bifocal in the selected frame
  • Properly adjusting the frame to your face and head

If all of the above are not chosen specifically for you, it’s not uncommon to have problems that may be immediate or come on after using your new eyeglasses for an extended period of time. Common complaints for improperly ordered or fit eyewear can include headaches, fatigue, an “eye pulling” sensation, nausea, dizziness, or pain or pressure marks on your nose or around your ears. Eyeglasses are the traditional method of correcting vision problems. They can correct almost all common vision conditions. Your doctor took great care in determining the accurate prescription for your eyes. Please ensure that if you are not getting your glasses from our office, that whoever you have chosen to fill the prescription, takes as much care certifying that the glasses are properly, selected, and accurately measured and fitted. Please be aware that glasses that have not been physically measured while placed on your face cannot be made accurately and therefore have a higher likelihood of not producing optimal and/or comfortable vision.
