Those of us with children spend alot of time and energy ensuring our kids have every advantage when it comes to learning. It is believed that 80% of what we learn is through our vision. If that is the case, it is quite important that our children are seeing far away and up close as clearly and as comfortably as possible.
It is quite difficult to know if a child has one eye that is blurry, has focusing problems, eye alignment issues or is straining. They have no reference point for what good vision is from which to judge. These issues are addressed during a thorough eye exam.
Some children have eye muscle coordination issues or focusing issues that affect their ability to learn, read and wright. These issues can be more dificult to diagnose. However, often these issues may not not be addressed because these issues if diagnosed were hard to treat. Now new computerized home based visual therapy exercise programs are available to help train and improve these visual skills if these skills are found to be suboptimal.
I find it very rewarding to help young people improve their vision to allow for improved performance at school and play. I have watched childrens self esteem and self confidence improve with their improved grades.
So do your children a favour and take them to their eye doctor annually from at least age 3 onwards - their future may depend on it!
(and tell your doctor about any concerns you have about your child)
