  • "We barely go to optometrists so when we do, we should look for the best! I am super pleased I chose Dr. Pal\'s office. They were helpful from beginning to end, from booking on the phone to my actual visit. Dr. Pal was very detailed and went in-depth about my eye health. She is very patient and made me feel calm. The optician helped me pick a great pair of glasses, they were genuinely friendly which is a huge bonus."

  • "I have been going to Dr. Pal for several years now. My most recent visit on June 6, 2016 was the best experience there that I have ever had. Firstly, the women on the desk were friendly and efficient - a very good prelude to my examination. Dr. Pal, herself, was, as usual, very thorough and encouraging in her examination. And she puts you at ease before we get into the eyes examination by discussing other things in life. That helps to ease any stress I may have. And they now have a man in the office who does that difficult examination (name of which I do not know!). He is so patient and encouraging and made the exam not so difficult for me this time. After all that, I saw Dr. Pal again before I left and she told me my eyes were good! Even had the news been not so good, I believe that I would be able to handle it because I truly believe that Dr. Pal and her staff would have taken good care of me. I will always go back to Dr. Pal and members of her team because I truly believe"

  • " I have been to a few appointments at Dr. Pal\'s office over the last year for dry eye issues and every time it has been a very positive experience. The 3 receptionists at the front desk are warm and friendly. They are attentive and provide a very high level of customer service. I appreciate that they call me by name and remembered conversations we had at previous visits. I find Dr. Pal to be an excellent practitioner who is very thorough with her exams, has a lovely personality and takes the time to answer any and all questions that may arise. I am happy with the computer glasses I purchased and value the honest opinions I received from the staff when selecting frames. It was refreshing to have multiple opinions on styles and I felt they truly wanted me to walk out with a frame that was best suited to me. I highly recommend Dr. Pal \'s office! As a health care practitioner myself, I think all health care experiences should be this personilzed and friendly!"

Why Should You Consider Laser Cataract Surgery vs Traditional Cataract Surgery

Contents

Laser Cataract Surgery offers a number of unique advantages over traditional cataract surgery.

More precise incisions that enhance post-operative healing.

In cataract surgery, like most types of surgery, the secret to better outcomes and

greater reproducibility is precision. The laser can create the necessary incisions in the cornea with extreme precision. The incisions created by the laser have a unique architecture and a more precise width which allows the incisions to seal better and the eye to heal better.

Improved reduction of astigmatism and better comfort.

In traditional cataract surgery, a series of incisions are made by the surgeon with a hand-held blade to reduce astigmatism. Using the laser, your surgeon can create incisions that are at a precise locatio, length, depth, and angle based on intraoperative imaging that uses OCT (optical coherence tomography), which provides higher resolution than an MRI. Because these incisions are created underneath the epithelium, the result is greater comfort during the healing process.

Potential for reduced dependency on glasses.

The laser can create a perfectly round central opening in the anterior capsule, which is located on the surface of the cataract. The opening in the anterior capsule can be centred over the line of vision, so when the intraocular lens is placed in the eye, it is held more firmly in place because of the uniform shape of the remaining capsule. With a more precise capsule opening there is less chance that the intraocular implant will vault forward, backward, or be tilted. This has been shown to result in better refractive outcomes and quality of vision.

Potential for clearer vision during the early postoperative period.

The laser is used to fragment or break the cataract into microscopic cubes before being removed primarily

with aspiration. Laser fragmentation results in the reduction or elimination of ultrasound energy that is typically used to break up a cataract. Less energy is safer for the long-term health of the cornea and may lead to clearer vision in the early postoperative period.

The surgeons at the Bochner Eye Institute are proud to be the first in Canada to offer Laser Cataract Surgery with the Catalys™ Precision Laser System.

Internationally, leading eye surgeons feel that this technology is the most significant advancement in cataract surgery in the past 50 years.

Traditional cataract surgery is considered one of the safest and most successful procedures performed in medicine today, although many of the steps are still performed with a surgical blade, a bent needle, or forceps.

Laser Cataract Surgery can automate these steps, adding a greater level of precision to the entire cataract procedure and potentially make surgery even safer and the results more predictable.

Using 3-dimensional imaging, we plan and customize the

entire procedure to the unique characteristics of your eye. The laser’s precision increases the likelihood of seeing well without glasses following surgery. At the Bochner Eye Institute, all patients can choose between Traditional Cataract Surgery (OHIP covered with a standard implant) and Laser Cataract Surgery. The cost of Laser Cataract Surgery with a premium IOL and astigmatism reduction is $3,500 per eye.

Laser Cataract Surgery has been shown to be easy for patients to undergo. There is minimal discomfort and patients generally experience a more rapid return of vision. The Catalys™ Precision Laser System was developed after 10 years of exhaustive engineering, research and testing. It is now approved in over 10 countries around the world including United States, England, Germany, France, Switzerland and Japan.
